Parks, Parks, Parks! And more adventures in Brussels

It’s been a busy few weeks here in Brussels and unfortunately, I haven’t been able to update as much as I would have liked! Nonetheless I must tell you all about last Friday because it was full of surprises.

Instead of our traditional International Reporting class last Friday, we ventured to the Parlamentarium, which is the new interactive museum at the European Parliament. Now I know what you must be thinking, “You’ve already been there!” and you are correct. This trip to the museum was for the role-playing game where the 15 of us acted as MEPs from different member states and different political parties.

It was fascinating to see firsthand how regulations are passed within Parliament… Or not passed, in our case. I was from the “Solidarity” political group whose platform reminded me a lot of the Republican party we have in the US. It was very cool to learn about my party’s beliefs and platform and fight in my committee meetings for these beliefs. I was a part of the Security and Defense Committee and we were battling over whether or not tracking chips should be placed in every EU citizen’s arm for security purposes. Personally, I thought this was a bit unethical, but my party was all for it, so I fought hard to pass the legislation.

After failing the regulation twice, the Council finally gave up on trying to come to an agreement and the entire piece failed. After all of our “hard work” (“interviewing” citizens, hearing from NGOs and Lobbying groups) it was sad that nothing came out of it. But this happens every day and after a lot longer period (it takes upwards of two years to pass a piece of legislation in the EU!). Nonetheless, it was a learning experience and a lot of fun!

After our stint as MEPs I had my first bagel in months! It was tasty and delicious and I wish I had taken a picture because with all of the other delicious pastries and bread they have here, bagels are few and far between.

After lunch the adventuring began. I termed it the Day of Parks because it seems as if my roommate, Liberty and myself stumbled upon park after park after park. Brussels is a very beautiful city (especially when it’s sunny!) and has so much to offer if you are willing to venture out and about!

Park #2:  Can you guess where we are?! No, not Spain, but with the only palm tree in Brussels in Square Ambiorix!

After what seemed like miles (it was about 3/4 of a mile…) and a few hours we finally found the Arc de Triomphe-Triomfboog (everything has to be in French and Flemish!)! It was hiding behind trees but we walked that extra 15 feet and found it!

Park #3: Can you see the Arc de Triomphe-Triomfboog hiding behind the trees in the Parc Cinquantenaire?

It is absolutely stunning and was erected for Belgium’s independence in the 19th century. Suffice to say it was a jam-packed afternoon.

Isn’t it stunning?!

Yet, it didn’t stop there! We went to Cinematek, which is a local movie theatre that plays older films and if you’re lucky you can see a silent film accompanied by a piano. Although our movie was in color and made in the fifties, it was also in French… with Dutch subtitles… It’s called the French Can-Can if you’re interested in a story about the beginnings of Moulin Rouge. Nonetheless, I actually was able to understand the entire film and follow along with the plot which was surprising, even to myself!

After the movie we went to the Congolese neighborhood that is right around the corner from my apartment and had one of the most delicious meals since I arrived. I have an entire thigh and chicken leg smothered in a delicious brown sauce and a mountain of rice. It reminded me a lot of Thai food in that the dish itself wasn’t too spicy but you add a tiny drop of a sauce they have on the side and your mouth erupts into flames. Flames and all, it was incredibly delicious and I can’t wait to try out more dishes in the many restaurants throughout the neighborhood!

I still have so much to tell you all about last weekend and this week at work, but we’re off to catch the train to Cologne! Who’s excited about Germany?! WE ARE!

Much, much more to come soon!

Sirens, sirens, sirens

I am not sure if it’s just me, but every time I hear a siren in Europe I think of the Bourne Movies. Obviously, each car attached to the sirens I hear must be chasing Jason Bourne! All joking aside, it seemed as if all I heard today was sirens. Granted, we are on the first floor and can hear everything outside of the glass windows, but this seemed a bit excessive.

It turns out Brussels taxi drivers are protesting today. My first Brussels portest, yay! They  are protesting recent policies the Transport Minister for the Brussels regional government (not to be confused with the Flanders or Wallonian regional governments… as I have mentioned before, it’s confusing!) has implemented recently. Rumor has it they blocked some of the city tunnels, leading to mass pandemonium on the streets of Brussels! I have to say it’s the worst traffic I have ever seen here. But even then, it’s nothing compared to the traffic that plagues suburban Washington D.C.

Have you ever seen an empty taxi queue at rush hour before? Me neither! (It’s the line of flagstones on the right)

Off the streets and back into the office, I had an interesting meeting with a few members of the US Departments of Justice and Homeland Security. It covered the issues concerning the violations of IPR (Intellectual Property Rights) which was actually very interesting. I learned that many European member states are reluctant to have a so-called “EU prosecutors office.” This was interesting to me since we have so many of these offices at home, as well as the overarching Attorney General’s office. Commissioner Viviane Reding is trying to implement this change, so I will have to keep you posted on the coming changes!

Coming out of this meeting presented me with an interesting realization for me: how much I missed American accents! Who knew this short visit from a few men I don’t know could make me feel even the slightest bit homesick? One would think, since I am surrounded by 14 Mizzou students and a few coworkers from America, I wouldn’t miss it so much… But I do! This is kind of sad, but it’s fine because the awesome gifts I received made up for it!

That was short, but sweet. I just felt the needed to share my (kind of) eventful day!

As Tigger would say, “Tata for now”!

It was a whirlwind of a first week in Brussels!

After a blustery day of subzero temperatures (in Celsius, of course!), my room is a cocoon of warmth that is very welcome! Not only has today been jam packed with sightseeing and tourists pictures galore (not ashamed!) but every day this week has been packed full of fun adventures, that I’ll have to tell you all about.

Before I begin, I must address the weather in a brief packing list to anyone venturing to this gorgeous city: bring leggings, hats and as many gloves as you can stuff in your suitcase! As expected it’s been a bit gray and a bit cold… to say the least. Ironically, the day we showed up, so did “The Day After Tomorrow” style weather. You may think this is all an exaggeration, and perhaps it is, but I just want to warn anyone coming that when people say “winters are mild” and “snow is a rarity” they are lying. Nonetheless, I have to admit I love bundling up in sweaters, scarves, hats and wearing my ‘sleeping bag coat,’ as it’s affectionately called at my house, around everywhere!

Now enough about acclimation to the weather, on to the interesting stuff! From gradually getting my bearings around many parts of the city to visiting both the Parliament and Council of the European Union (EU) to seeing the Grand Place (finally!) to to going to the US Ambassador’s Residence for a reception (wow!) to getting to know all 14 amazing students on this trip with me, this week has been loads of fun! Brussels has taught me a lot of things that I can really only explain in pictures… Please enjoy Liberty galavanting around Brussels in the gallery below!

We are off for more adventures in Antwerp tomorrow, maybe I’ll buy some diamonds…
